OpenCart upgrade for an old shop (1.5, 2.x)

I upgrade old OpenCart shops, for example versions 1.5 and 2.x, to OpenCart 3.0.x, if your theme and extensions allow it. First I make a backup copy, then I test the changes in a test copy, and your shop keeps working in the meantime.

When an OpenCart upgrade makes sense

An OpenCart upgrade moves your shop's system to a newer version. It is not a new website build. Owners write to me when:

  • the shop is old and nobody dares to touch it, because it is unclear what will break;
  • your hosting moved you to a newer PHP, and the shop shows an error or a blank page;
  • a new extension does not work with the old OpenCart version.

If on a phone the text and buttons are too small, or the browser shows a “Not secure” warning, that does not by itself mean the system needs upgrading. If the shop shows one specific error and otherwise works, fixing the error is enough. An upgrade is for when the system version itself is the problem.

What I do in an upgrade

  • I look at which OpenCart version, theme and extensions you use, and which PHP your hosting supports.
  • I check the extensions: which will work in the new version and which have to be replaced. I tell you this in advance.
  • I upgrade the files and the database in a test copy. I carry products and orders over to the new version; before that I make a backup of the whole website and the database. What exactly we carry over, we agree after the check.
  • I try to keep the design and the addresses of the old pages. What exactly we keep, we agree after the check. If a theme or an extension is not compatible with the new version, I tell you what would have to change.

After the upgrade I can adapt extensions or connect payment and shipping methods as your OpenCart developer.

How an OpenCart upgrade works, step by step

An upgrade should not be done directly in a live shop, so I upgrade it in a test copy. The steps, also described under How I work:

  1. I check and write to you. I look at the shop and tell you in writing what I would do and what it would cost. This is free.
  2. I make a backup copy. I copy the whole website and the database, so I can restore everything if needed.
  3. I upgrade in a test copy. I test the changes in the copy, not in your shop. Your shop keeps running in the meantime.
  4. I move it to the live shop. When everything is checked, I move the changes over.

Examples from past work

siuvimomanija.lt. An OpenCart shop that has been online since 2010. I updated it. The shop has automatic shipping price calculation and card payment, and I also worked on its SEO (visibility in Google search). I have looked after six websites of this long-term client for two years.

e.segris.lt. An old OpenCart 1.5 shop. I gave it a new look for phones and computers, fixed SSL (HTTPS), added product descriptions in Lithuanian with photos and video, and fixed its SEO. This was design and content work, not a version upgrade.

More, with screenshots, is under Past work.

Price and payment

The price is agreed before I start, and you pay in instalments. We can issue a VAT invoice.

After the upgrade you can choose monthly website maintenance.

OpenCart upgrade FAQ

Which OpenCart versions do you upgrade?

After a check I suggest upgrading OpenCart 1.5 and 2.x shops to OpenCart 3.0.x, if that suits your shop. Before I start, I look at which version, theme and extensions you use, and I write down what I would do.

Will my design and URLs stay the same after the upgrade?

That is the goal, and I check it in the test copy. If a theme or an extension is not compatible with the new version, I tell you in advance what would have to change and what it would cost.

Will my shop stop working during the upgrade?

I do the work in a test copy, and your shop keeps running in the meantime. I move the changes into the live shop only when everything is checked.

Can you upgrade to OpenCart 4 or to a newer PHP version?

My offer is OpenCart 3.0.x. Whether OpenCart 4 or a newer PHP suits your shop, I will tell you after a check, because it depends on your theme and extensions.

How much does an OpenCart upgrade cost?

The price depends on the version, the theme and the extensions, so I first look and tell you the price in writing. The price is agreed before I start, and you pay in instalments. We can issue a VAT invoice.
